What is a Speech Language Pathologist?

A speech-language pathologist is a specialist with training in the diagnosis and treatment of voice and language disorders. These professionals are trained at the master’s or doctoral level to perform non-medical evaluations of voice disorders and develop a plan to improve voice when necessary.

Many voice disorders occur along with neurological and psychological physical conditions and speech pathologists often work as members of a patient care team along with physicians and other health care providers.

Therapists also work with people to help cope with the stress associated with these problems as well as working on how to modify behavior that hinders communication. Speech Language Pathologists are certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and require a license to practice in New York State.
